The PEDS (Pediatric Education for Diabetes in Schools) Program originated from a need to provide schools with information on reasonable accommodations that were necessary in order to provide appropriate management for students with diabetes at schools. This information was compiled and entitled, Recommendations for Diabetes Care in the Schools.

The Recommendations will assist school personnel, (including administrators, school nurses, teachers and other school staff), parents, students and health care providers in knowing what contributions they need to make in order to provide appropriate diabetes care at school while achieving an optimal education.

A further need arose to provide schools with updated knowledge regarding diabetes due to ever-changing technology, research and increasing numbers of children with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Diabetes Basics was written in response to this need and is geared towards educating school staff. The Basics cover general information on all aspects of diabetes care.
